HOW SOME COACHES VALUED THE IMPACT OF COMPLETING THE LMA SCHOOL OF FOOTBALL MANAGEMENT COURSE ON ' IDENTIFYING POTENTIAL TALENT
Claus Bech Jørgensen: Academy Coach , Oxford United FC
"One thing though, that I have definitely focused more on as a result of completing the Online Talent ID Course is a player’s anticipation to offensive and defensive developments in the game.
Positive reactions and a hardworking attitude have always been top of my list, but I try specifically to look at what players do in the split second BEFORE his/her team wins/loses the ball, e.g. are they walking flat footed staring at the ball or on their toes with their head looking around for opportunities?"
Drew Taylor, Director of Coaching Mosman F.C.,Sydney, Australia and Head Coach New South Wales U14 Boys Team
“ Based on the learnings from the course, we have implemented a new method of tracking player performance throughout the season based on key competencies to allow us to have a more robust identification method for potentially talented players rather than relying on traditional point-in-time grading/trials. We have done this by developing a framework including player attributes across the four pillars along with some position specific competencies. This has also enabled us to develop individual learning plans for players and also help coaches understand how they can further support/stretch players in their cohort. It has been very beneficial and well received by staff, players and parents.”
Guy Branston - Loans Manager Leicester City FC U23’s , English Premier League
“ From the Course I found the demographic study of footballers in Europe very insightful and gave me a lot of parameters to work off and work with. The Insight in others that work in talent id with the community that is available on the course is great and I made a lot of football friends and contacts using this part of the course.”
Vic Bragg ,Professional Development Coach, Brighton and Hove Albion FC, English Premier League
“Position Specific:
As a result of the course, we have looked in more detail at the qualities players need, in particular positions, to take them to a higher level. For example a left back has to be able to use the outside hook when breaking out then turning back to protect the ball. So now we are not just saying he should be able to turn with the ball, we are being more specific, looking for greater quality and detail whilst also making better decisions.
We could also ask whether the LB, as an example, can fade or curl the ball into a player’s path in the channel. These are the subtle differences that can help to identify the quality of a player and his ability to play at a higher level. It also helps to show areas that have to be worked on if a player is to progress.
Identifying Geographical Hotspots:
A few years ago we recognised that although we were doing well in recruiting local lads we needed to identify hotspots – geographical areas that were producing many good players for Academies. Due to finances we were unable to''spread our wings’ but now we have the resources and the Course has reminded us of the need to recruit from more fruitful areas. The scouts have been given designated areas to search for players whilst also having the responsibility for finding the best schools, clubs etc so as to spend their time more wisely. This has lead to greater efficiency and a more thoughtful, organised approach. “
