How do you identify ‘Late Developers’ ….earlier ? !
In the LMA School of Football Management Online Course ‘ Identifying Potential Talent’ we devote one of the 5 modules of the course to this question.
We asked the question to learners - Can you think any ONE instance where you have seen a player as a youngster who has then developed as a late teenager ( or older ) .What was the key factor in this player which you ' missed ' or could not see at an early age which later became key to this player's success ?
We asked them which of the following four factors was the factor they failed to spot. The choice was :
- I missed identifying the physical potential development of the player
- I missed identifying the psychological/social potential development of the player
- I missed identifying the technical potential development of the player
- I missed identifying the tactical potential development of the player - the player’s ability to understand the game
How would you answer this question ?
The Results from the couple of hundred learners who have taken the course were are follows :
The evidence therefore from learners on this course is that failing to identify potential in the physical , psychological and social development of the player are the key aspects to avoid
Module 8 on the course therefore examines methods to avoid these pitfalls and attempts to help learners identify ‘ late developers ‘
You may wish to take this short one question anonymous survey here as to the methods you would recommend to identify ‘ late developers ‘ more effectively. We will publish these results in our next blog
The Problem may not only be 'late development ' in size but on the course we look at some Case Studies:
- Case Study of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain referenced here
- Case Studies from Manchester United of Jesse Lingard and Scott McTominay who is now ( 2018 ) 6'4" tall, he was only 5'7" at the start of 2015
We have also provided here a sample of the recommendations from learners on this course of methods they have found - or will intend to use - in order to help you identify potential 'late developers’. The names of the learners making these statements do, however, remain confidential
