Fortum Tutor is a remarkable programme to improve coaching level and atmosphere in children’s football in Finland. Football Association of Finland together with it’s partner Fortum created the programme in 2009. The purpose of the programme is to improve the quality of children’s football by coaching coaches.
There are thousands of inexperienced coaches who start coaching the youngest age groups in club teams. Those are the ones who need the biggest support in their young coaching careers. The finnish FA (supported by Fortum) has hired 97 part time tutors to help the coaches in more than 100 football clubs. The tutors are experts in children’s coaching and/or education.
The FA educates the tutor’s for their job. Tutor’s main task is to go follow team practices and give the coaches personal feedback about their coaching and interaction with players. They do that 3-5 times times/team. Tutors also do coaching education in clubs for the coaches who don’t have the lower level coaching diploma yet. 20 % of tutors job is to help the clubs in the overall club development.
Another part of the program is to go to 5 biggest youth football tournaments in Finland and educate coaches how to improve their coaching skills in matches/tournaments. That way the programme is able to help hundreds of coaches in a couple of days. The feedback the FA and Fortum have received from the clubs, coaches and the tutors themselves has been outstanding.
A new thing this year is that FA and Fortum organize in fall a high level coaching seminar for about three hundred children’s coaches selected by the tutors. The idea is to bring talented coaches together and give them quality extra coaching education and more enthusiasm to improve and keep doing their important job.
The programme has also produced a lot of material not only for coaches but also for children’s parents etc. to help teams to improve.
Numbers: There are 97 tutors in about 130 clubs. The tutors are able to do tutoring for more than 2000 children’s coaches all over Finland.
